Having a ship and a loyal crew, the pirates are eager to start plundering the Fever Seas. But Sandara and Fishguts point out that to be successful, they have to first make sure no one recognizes their newly caught shp. The pirates decide to head in the same direction as Plugg intended, a small port called Rickety’s Squibs where a ship can be “squibbed” so it no longer resembles it’s former self.
Upon arriving, they make a deal with ‘Ol Rickety, and set about relaxing in the small village as the workers toil day and night on the _Man’s Promise_. Unfortunately, the incredible heat wave that has afflicted Rickety’s operation also creates a number of “problems” that the heroes find themselves a part of.
First, a young water naga, driven mad by hunger, attacks some workers on the coast. The pirates are able to fend her off, and even make an offer to her to keep her fed as long as she joins with the crew. She whole-hearted does, to the amazement of the dock-workers and the crew of the Man’s Promise as well.
Soon after, giant wasps attack the village, the heat-wave destroying their natural food source and they come looking for more dangerous game. The heroes drive away, kill, or capture the wasps before anyone gets seriously hurt, much to the delight of Rickety who drops some of the price of the squibbing. Before they can celebrate, however, a party of buccaneers has landed on the beach, being led by a tall captain with a wooden pegleg.
Merrill Pegsworthy and the pirates quickly come to an accord since the buccaneers were not here to fight, but to establish business with Rickety. The old squibber is worried, though. His lookout should have notified them of Pegsworthy’s approach and he fears something befell him.
The pirates volunteer to investigate, fighting wild boars on the trip to the lookout post, but find the lookout dead of a wasp attack. Rotgut, his pirate, takes a fancy to Nex and the heroes return to the village with the fallen lookout and news of his demise.
A week later, the squibbing is complete and the rechristening ceremony is underway. The Dark Reaver is christened by Captain Pegsworthy and the pirates head out to the open sea to begin their ill-gotten careers. Their first encounter is with a group of sahuagind that attack the ship, but are easily repelled by the Reaver’s officers and crew.
A few days after the sahuagin attack, the Dark Reaver gets its first taste of piracy, running down and capturing the fishing trawler, the Elten Baide. The heroes are now officially wanted for piracy…
